Following a serious fire in 2017, the original Paterson Building at The Christie Hospital in Manchester had to be closed. Ambitious new plans were created to build a ‘world-leading’ cancer research centre on the original site.
The redevelopment demanded significant excavation and structural support, prompting main contractor IHP (VINCI & Sir Robert McAlpine JV) to engage Mabey Hire for specialised bracing and real-time monitoring solutions.
To safely manage the deep two-level excavation, Mabey Hire designed a comprehensive temporary works scheme that included propping systems ranging from 3m to 24m, all incorporating the Super Bracing Strut system for high load capacity.
This solution allowed the capping beam and piles to withstand heavy ground pressures while enabling work to progress safely across both basement floors. Our experienced team handled the installation, maintenance, and dismantling of the system in line with BS5975 standards, ensuring full compliance and site safety.

Mabey Hire also provided specialist support for the removal of props beneath a large concrete slab, a complex task managed with precision and technical expertise. To ensure ongoing safety, the team implemented 3D structural monitoring using robotic total stations and inclinometers, complemented by the LIVEpin system for real-time load measurement.
These monitoring tools offered the contractor instant access to data and alerts, helping maintain progress and stability throughout the build. The collaboration ensured the Paterson Building redevelopment advanced efficiently, safely, and on schedule.
