For expansion works at a distillery in Scotland, Mabey Hire supported major ground excavation and the construction of a 100 m retaining wall by designing a combined temporary and permanent works solution. Initially planned as cantilevered sheet piles but found unfeasible as a permanent solution, they instead installed 10m sheet piles, supported by 15 raking props and two knee-brace props, using modular frame extensions and Larsen piles as thrust restraints.
Once the permanent retaining wall was cast against the sheet piles, the temporary support system was safely removed, with delivery from initial contact to site in under five weeks.
Mabey Hire delivered a tailored temporary works solution by installing 10m sheet piles supported by raking and knee-brace props, using Larsen piles and modular frame extensions as sustainable thrust restraints. The propping system was carefully designed to avoid clashes with permanent works and to provide lower-level support, developed in close coordination with consultants Richter.
Super Bracing Struts and the hydraulic Super Shaftbrace formed the core of the temporary system, which was designed, supplied, and delivered to site in under five weeks. The temporary works safely remained in place for 10 weeks while the permanent concrete retaining wall was built against the sheet piles, after which all temporary elements were removed following smooth, ahead-of-schedule project delivery.

“The project progressed really smoothly, with Mabey Hire pulling out all the stops in terms of getting their kit to site in time. In fact, we completed the construction of the permanent retaining wall ahead of schedule, meaning the temporary elements were able to be removed earlier than planned. Once again, Mabey Hire’s in-house team promptly returned to site and expertly disassembled their equipment.”
