When looking to provide the foundations for a new filter press at Wight Building Materials’ depot on the Isle of Wight, Crownpark Builders called on us to supply a formwork system. Our extensive range of solutions were specified, with our Frami formwork system, Mass 10 and System 160 propping all used.

The challenge

Design and Ground Support

The installation of the new filter press required a robust concrete structure capable of elevating the machine to allow dried silt to discharge below. This meant the temporary works needed to safely support the weight and geometry of the cast-in-situ concrete during construction. Mabey Hire provided a carefully designed formwork and propping system that ensured stability and accuracy throughout the pour.

Site Access Issues

Given the project’s island location, moving materials and equipment to site posed logistical challenges. Deliveries had to be efficiently coordinated to minimise disruption and ensure continuity of work. Mabey Hire’s proximity via its Romsey depot and its ability to mobilise equipment quickly helped overcome these constraints.

Project Support

The project involved close coordination with Crownpark Builders, who were responsible for constructing the new machine base. Our temporary works solution had to align precisely with their requirements. Mabey Hire’s engineering and project support ensured the temporary systems were delivered, installed, and removed in sync with the build schedule.

Our solution

Originally, our Frami formwork solution was specified, but this was revised due to the extensive size of the project, which required a larger solution. As such, we introduced System 160 and Mass 10 props into the scheme, in addition to our formwork system, which Crownpark Builders then assembled on site. Trevor Frankling, Managing Director at Crownpark Builders: “After a few days spent familiarising ourselves with the equipment, it all went together without a hitch. We were obviously very happy with the effectiveness of the temporary works solutions we used.”

The filter press is now fully functioning, enabling Wight Building Materials to manage its land in a more sustainable way.

Get in touch

“We chose to work with Mabey Hire for the supply of the temporary works equipment for numerous reasons. As well as having a depot just over the water in Romsey, we’ve worked with the Mabey Hire team on a range of other projects over the last 30 years and so have a good relationship. We know that we can trust them and their equipment – ultimately, they’re experts at what they do and it shows in the final results.”
