When a non-destructive test uncovered deterioration in the press-frame of a major paper machine at one of the UK’s remaining paper mills, the Mabey Hire monitoring team was engaged to install eight wireless bi-axial tilt sensors around the structure and link them into a live portal. Over the 12 month period while the new frame was fabricated and replaced, the system provided continuous insight into any unexpected movement, giving early-warning of potential issues and helping ensure safe, uninterrupted production.
Mabey Hire delivered a bespoke monitoring solution for CADXtra by mounting eight high-accuracy wireless bi-axial tilt sensors at strategic points around the ageing paper-machine frame, calibrating them to detect X- and Y-axis movement and linking all data to the Insite web portal for real-time insight throughout the 12-month retrofit period.
Installed in spring 2024 and remaining in place until the new frame was fabricated and fitted, the system enabled continual assessment of the machine’s condition, with live data, alerts, and automated reports supporting safe operation and informed decision-making. Praised by CADXtra’s Technical Project Manager, Michael Card, the solution demonstrated Mabey Hire’s ability to adapt its temporary works expertise to an unconventional industrial application and to provide responsive, collaborative service from design through installation and monitoring.

“I’ve now worked with Mabey Hire on all sorts of projects, and I can safely say that this was one of the more unusual applications of its equipment that I’ve seen. The whole team was extremely helpful, from the install team who fitted the sensors to Connor in the monitoring team – it’s the exact type of service I’d expect from a supplier.”
