The Ormskirk section of the Leeds to Liverpool Canal is known as an area of natural beauty, visited by many walkers each year. It is home to many boat users with permanent moorings and an established vole population.
The Canal & River Trust (CRT) identified an area of canal bank in Ormskirk that required remedial repairs to be carried out to prevent any loss of the adjacent towpath, and further loss of coping stones.
Our team manufactured the new steel sheet piles to the exact specifications required, producing them at our rolling mills in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. The stronger section selected was designed to cope with the project’s challenging ground conditions, helping the piling rig install the piles more efficiently and accurately follow the natural curvature of the towpath.
Alongside the piles, we supplied all necessary walings and fixings, ensuring the line of protection was robust enough to guard against boat strikes and deliver long-term stability for the canal edge.

Throughout the works, the towpath remained open to the public and canal traffic continued uninterrupted, minimising disruption to both visitors and the local wildlife, including the resident vole population.
The project was delivered to the full satisfaction of the client and stakeholders, with our technical expertise and tailored manufacturing capability enabling an effective, sensitive and durable repair solution for this important section of the Leeds to Liverpool Canal.
